Frequently Asked Questions

What is MFI?

Magnetic Field Imaging.

MFI detects, records and displays the magnetic fields, generated by active cells inside the human body;

MFI is the only non-invasive, contact-free electrophysiological diagnostic method;

MFI displays a functional image.

What are the indications that can be detected by a MFI system?

The main indications:

  • Ventricular Arrhythmia;
  • Coronary ischemia;
  • Risk stratification.

Further indications

Risk stratification of ventricular tachycardia (VT) patients;
Early detection of coronary artery diseases (CAD) in asymptomatic patients;
Detection of CAD in acute patients;
Foetal heart diagnosis;
Monitoring of patients that received a stent or underwent a balloon dilatation;
Monitoring of post bypass and post heart transplantation patients;
Screening of diabetes patients;
Monitoring of the heart function after a myocardial infarction (MI);
Monitoring of the heart function after a heart transplantation;
Diagnosis of cardiac microvascular diseases.

How long does the recording take?

The recording in resting state takes 2-3 minutes.
The recording 'under stress' takes 10-15 minutes.

How long will it take to get the result?

The system can supply standardized results just one minute after the examination. Even in the case of complex data analysis, results are available within a few minutes.

Can pregnant women be examined?

As MFI examination is non-invasive, which has no contact with the patient and not any side effect, the system can be specially used for the heart diagnostic on pregnant women and fetuses (older than 4 months).

Is it possible to perform the diagnose on the patient with pace maker?

It depends on the type of the pace maker. If you need more specific answer, please contact our technical director (Mail: support(at)bmdsys.de).

Is it possible to perform the diagnose on the patient with Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD)?

It depends on the type of the ICD. If you need more specific answer, please contact our technical director (Mail: support(at)bmdsys.de).

Which kind of patient is not allowed to have the a MFI examination?

In principle all the patients are allowed to perform the recording, but if the patient has magnetic material or ferromagnetic material implanted in the body, the recording result will be influenced. So it is recommend that these patients do not have such an examination made. Moreover this system is not suitable for patients with the body mass index (BMI) going beyond 40.

How to prepare the patient for the MFI recording?

The patient needs only to remove the magnetic material from the body before the MFI recording and lay down on the patient support. No further preparation is necessary.

Does the patient need to remove earrings, watch, etc?

To assure a better result of the recording, it is recommended that the patients remove any earrings, watches and other magnetic material from the body.

What is the advantage of MFI system comparing to the other diagnostic method?

  • MFI optimizes cardiac diagnosis;
  • MFI is qualified for ischemia diagnosis;
  • MFI is qualified for arrhythmia diagnosis;
  • MFI is qualified for prenatal cardiac diagnosis;
  • MFI is non-invasive;
  • MFI is free of radiation;
  • MFI does not need contrast media;
  • MFI does not need radioactive tracers;
  • MFI does not need fixed electrodes;
  • MFI displays the cell functionality;
  • MFI is able to record up to 8,200 images per second;
  • MFI-examinations are short;
  • MFI is easy to handle.

Which information does MFI offer more than ECG?

On their way to the surface of the body, the electric signals are influenced by the different electric conductivity of the tissues, but magnetic signals go virtually undisturbed through these regions. Circular electric currents in the myocardium (vortex currents within the cardiac muscle, J. Wikswo 1982) do not reach the body’s surface, but can be detected by the MFI system.

Who will be the customers for the MFI system?

The cardiac department; the emergency depart of the hospital and clinical practice.
